When to test

  • You must be fasting to perform this test.
  • The collection must be made before 11.30 a.m. on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and returned the same day by post at a drop-off point or by scheduling a pick-up by 12 noon.

Amount of blood to be collected: 

You should use the collection tube with the yellow cap and collect a minimum amount of blood of 400 μL.

Who should take the test?

  • Homem com mais de 50 anos;
  • Com micção frequente ou dolorosa;
  • Com sangue no sêmen ou na urina;
  • Com disfunção erétil;
  • Que pretendem monitorizar uma condição já diagnosticada;
  • Tenham um histórico familiar de cancro da próstata;
  • Estejam a realizar uma reposição hormonal de testosterona e pretendem verificar os níveis de PSA total.

O cancro da próstata pode evoluir de uma forma lenta e os pacientes não necessitam de realizar uma biópsia para detectar o problema.

Nestes casos, o teste de PSA total pode revelar-se muito importante de forma a diagnosticar precocemente a doença.

PSA

O PSA total é utilizado na deteção de cancro da próstata. O teste mede a quantidade de PSA (antígeno específico da próstata) no sangue que é produzido pelo tecido da próstata. Os níveis de PSA são determinados através de uma colheita de sangue e uma elevada concentração pode sugerir a presença de cancro da próstata. O teste não é totalmente específico para o cancro da próstata. Um elevado valor de PSA no sangue pode indicar outro problema na próstata sem ser cancro.
