Heart Failure Test
Heart Failure Test
Nt-pro BNP is an inactive prohormone that is released into the bloodstream in response to increased heart wall strain and volume overload. This marker is released when the heart is having difficulty pumping blood effectively and is a key indicator of heart failure.
Measuring NT-proBNP levels can provide valuable information about heart health, helping to diagnose and monitor heart failure, as well as assess its severity.
NT-proBNP levels can be influenced by several factors, including age, kidney function and other medical conditions. Elevated levels of this marker are usually indicative of heart failure, but may also be present in other clinical conditions, such as chronic kidney disease. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with a qualified healthcare professional and taking into account associated symptoms.

Who should take the test?
The NT-proBNP test is primarily indicated for individuals who have symptoms suggestive of heart failure, such as shortness of breath, leg swelling, and extreme fatigue. It is also recommended for people with a history of heart disease or who are at high risk of developing heart failure, including people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of acute myocardial infarction.
The test is also important in monitoring people already diagnosed with heart failure, helping to assess the response to treatment and the need for medication adjustments.
