Who should get tested
- You are a man over 50 years old;
- Frequent or painful urination;
- Blood in semen or urine;
- Erectile dysfunction;
- You want to monitor an already diagnosed condition;
- You have a family history of prostate cancer;
- You are doing testosterone replacement and want to check your PSA levels.
- PSA : Total PSA is used to detect prostate cancer. The test measures the amount of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in the blood, which is produced by prostate tissue. PSA levels are determined by drawing blood, and a high level may suggest prostate cancer. The test is not completely specific for prostate cancer. A high PSA level in the blood may indicate another prostate problem other than cancer.
Prostate cancer can develop slowly and patients do not need to undergo a biopsy to detect the problem.
In these cases, the total PSA test can be very important in order to diagnose the disease early.
